  58. Our local club, of which I am an officer, wants to install, own, and
  59. operate a repeater.  The equipment, site, etc. seem to be the easy
  60. part (even the coordination :-).  My question is this:  What
  61. organizational structure do other clubs use to operate repeaters?
  62.  
  63. Not all members of the club are going to participate in the repeater
  64. funding or operation so there is likely to be two levels of dues and
  65. participation.  What kind of legal agreements (if any) are required
  66. between the club and the trustee?  Are there any legal requirements
  67. for the club regarding non-profit status (it will have assets and
  68. raise funds to support the repeater)?  Should the club incorporate?
  69.  
  70. Being neophites at this, I would like to hear what other
  71. clubs/organizations have done and how they have structured
  72. themselves to deal with this.

  142. Over the past several months I posted updates about a 
  143. DSP "The Hamblaster" that Will Torgrim (N9PEA) and myself 
  144. are developing.
  145.  
  146. We are focusing our efforts on a packet modem that allows
  147. the user to improve H.F. reception by interfacing the Ham-
  148. blaster (a PC compatable DSP sound board) to a transceiver 
  149. and a packet or all mode TNC.  Modems/filters for RTTY, 
  150. Packtor, Amtor are also under developement and are compatable 
  151. with the same control panal software.  
  152.  
  153. Here are the latest developements 
  154.  
  155.  
  156. 1) We do Windows!    There's a receive/demodulator
  157.    control panal that allows me to control the FSK demo-
  158.    dulator's filter center frequency using a mouse driven 
  159.    slidebar. There's also an on screen tuning indicator that 
  160.    mirrors the tuning slidebar.  You tune the filter by moving 
  161.    the mouse cursor over the filter tune slide bar button and 
  162.    when you press the left mouse button the slide bar button 
  163.    moves.  
  164.  
  165. 2) An option allows me to lock the tuning indicator to the
  166.    "Filter Tune" slide bar.  The Hamblaster sends frequency in-
  167.    formation, that it hears at the output of the first filter,
  168.    to the PC via the PC's I/O epansion port. Even in noisy 
  169.    conditions it can count the center frequency of an FSK signal.   
  170.    The tuning indicator does jump around in noisy conditions 
  171.  
  172. 3) A new Windows control panel provides an on screen digital
  173.    storage oscilloscope.  By pressing the "SNAP SHOT" button, 
  174.    you can capture 4 signals and display the traces in a graphics
  175.    window.  The traces can be resized or you can move the window
  176.    left or right.  About 100 ms per trace is aquired. 
  177.    You can select or attach the 4 traces to any of the signals that
  178.    are displayed on a block diagram in the o-scope control panal.
  179.    The Hamblaster captures the signals and stores them in it's own
  180.    memory.  Then the PC gets the data from the Hamblaster via the
  181.    PC I/O port and stores it in the PC memory.  The software
  182.    displays the aquisition by getting the data from the PC RAM.
  183.    The process takes about 2 to 3 seconds (the DOS version takes 
  184.    about 1/2 the time to execute).  
  185.  
  186. 4) Using Windows multitasking, you can run the Hamblaster software
  187.    and your favorate a packet program (like PC Packratt).  I was even
  188.    able to run two instances of the same Hamblaster software.  Both
  189.    control panals displayed the tune bar and responded it real time.
  190.    I also got two o-scope aquisitions.   
  191.

  194. 5) We now have FFT analysis software built into the o-scope control
  195.    panel.  When you click on the "Freq" button the audio spectrum is
  196.    displayed.  You can move the mouse cursor over the display and  
  197.    where ever it is positioned, the frequency is displayed in the 
  198.    status window.  When you click the mouse the modem filters jump
  199.    to the frequency.  This feature provides a simple tuning aid.   
  200.  
  201.    Another button allows you to convert all 4 traces (mentioned in 
  202.    paragraph 3) to spectral displays.  You can, for example, analyze
  203.    the frequency at the input signal, the modem prefilter and the 
  204.    mark filter output.   Based on the FFT, a second button allows 
  205.    you to modify the filter tune limits by clicking on min-max 
  206.    limits that you select.

  209. I have to admit, After I debugged the FFT software and I getting
  210. the control panel working to my satifaction,  I got hooked on the 
  211. operation of the Hamblaster system.  I spent hours tuning the 40 
  212. and 20 meter bands, displaying the FFT and copying CW/RTTY signals
  213. through the Hamblaster filters.  The FFT really simplifies the
  214. tuning process.

  317. rec.radio.amateur.policy has served as our de-facto advocacy newsgroup,
  318. as most of the advocacy wars seem to revolve around FCC regulations,
  319. no-code licenses, content and administration of VE exams, etc.  Excerpted
  320. from the Guide to the Personal Radio Newsgroups, posted monthly:

  333. If people aren't using the newsgroup (although many clearly are, if recent
  334. traffic on it is any indication), it is for reasons that won't be
  335. eliminated by the creation of yet another rec.radio.amateur.* newsgroup.
  336. There was also a recent reorganization of the newsgroups (mid-'93), so
  337. people are likely to be burned out on the idea of creating more
  338. newsgroups.  If you are interested in discussing this further off-line
  339. with about two-dozen or so newsgroup veterans and FAQ maintainers, there
  340. is an excellent forum for this purpose, namely the rec.radio.amateur.*

  429.      I am interested in obtaining information about thermoelectric
  430. devices called Peltier Diodes (junctions?).  My extremely limited
  431. understanding of these devices is that at low voltage DC they act as
  432. unidirectional heat pumps, and have been used in electric cooler
  433. units with suitable heat sinks and "cold" sinks on the heat energy
  434. input side.  Since I am NOT an electrical engineer (a
  435. botanist/professor actually) I'd appreciate any information the
  436. engineers among you might have as to how these devices work
  437. (practically, not theoretically!), how they are rated, and if
  438. possible, how to use them in constructing cooler units.  These might
  439. be useful for improving efficiency of power supply heat sinks?? but
  440. honestly, my ulterior motive is in the construction of a
  441. cool-chamber in which to store my homebrew beers!!  As a ham with a
  442. very small modicum of electronics background (pretty damn small!),
  443. I've been asked by some fellow homebrewers to investigate these
  444. beasts, and try to prototype some "homebrew" coolers for our
  445. homebrews (pretty neat, eh?).
  446.      If any of you have information about these Peltier devices,
  447. application notes,m thermal ratings, recommendations for
  448. installation/increasing efficiency, etc.  I'd be (actually WE'D be)
  449. very appreciative to learn about these, or at least sources where we
  450. could get more information.  Thanks in advance for your help....

  474. I disagree that the kits are cheaper.  I bought a Ramsey SCA decoder for
  475. $25 that did NOT work in kit form.  I finally gave up and bought an SCA from
  476. another company for $20 ASSEMBLED TESTED and it WORKS!!!! so much for
  477. cheap.

  489. response was down 43 DB at 67Khz which is where the SCA info is at.

  505. packs for my kenwood.  I got them from Periphex, in
  506. oxford, connecticut.  The had a good price and i cant seem to kill the packs.
  507. They make 'em for a wide range of rigs, and imho, they do the job.

  562.  Those WWV people are not very friendly. I called them up to be helpful.
  563.  They were having two problems! On the $5 dollar Timex I have that I got at a
  564.  yard sale, I see that WWV is about 5 seconds slow. I also have an S-38
  565.  receiver that I payed $20 for at a swapmeet. And, on that receiver it shows
  566.  that WWV is about 10 kc off most of the time, that is when they are not
  567. drifting

  586. It doesn't have to...the eight inches specification relates to the
  587. proximity of the (shielded) antenna cable to the ECU.  A transmitting
  588. antenna could be much further than 8 inches away and still induce large
  589. RF currents in the ECU leads.  However, with the ECU being located inside
  590. the car body, the ECU leads should be shielded against outside sources
  591. of EM fields.
